domestication of light
S
hot exclusively on large format color negative, The Domestication of Light is an on-going project based in the Western suburbs of Boston: Allston, Brighton, and Brookline. Ignoring the obvious differences in class between the three areas, I set about collecting examples of human-made light on natural and artificial surfaces.
During the day we are overpowered by wild, democratic light from the sun. In daylight, the sun enforces the importance of all objects outside of a shadow. In the night, we must pick and choose which things are important enough to be illuminated. Electricity forms a glowing blood which we can see pooling in darkness, just as the stars are visible when the skin of our atmosphere briefly becomes translucent.
Night is a time to reflect on the arbitrary distinctions between spaces, as the possibility and the cost of beauty.
